Traveling Wave: The First Mode

By Dr. Xing Min Wang

The wave equation describing the motion of a string can be derived by using Newton's Second Law:

F = m a.

we can find v = sqrt(w/k), as dimensional analysis has told us. If there is the string is infinite long, then we have a continuous frequency spectrum. There will be a traveling wave. Just like sound travels through air or light travels through space.
